High-touch surfaces like door hardware present a prime opportunity for the spread of germs and disease. Fortunately, antimicrobial solutions have been employed and proven effective for years, and adding them to your current equipment is a cost-effective and impactful way to help improve sanitation and general hygiene.
How Do Antimicrobial Solutions Work?
Antimicrobial solutions come in many different forms, but they all work on the same principle. Basically, antimicrobials function at the cellular level where they are able to continually prevent and disrupt the growth of microorganisms.
With the uninhabitable environment antimicrobials create, bacteria, mold, mildew, and other microorganisms simply can’t survive. The result is cleaner everyday surfaces, be they toys, countertops, door handles, or so on.
MicroShield from Assay Abloy
Antimicrobial solutions often come in the form of a coating for existing hardware, such as MicroSheild from Assay Abloy. The MicroShield solution utilizes ion-based technology from Agion, who provides antimicrobial solutions for countless industry.
MicroSheild works by preventing the spread of microbes like bacteria, mold, fungi, mildew, and algae. Controlled release also makes it a long-lasting solution, though the exact time the coating will be effective for is dependent on how often the treated surface is touched and the environment (i.e., hospital) that you’re applying it in.
Gallery Specialty Hardware (GSH)
Using a similar technology to MicroShield, GSH offers antimicrobial finishes powered by silver ion and zeolite technology. The finishes are roll-coated onto the galvanized steel surface, allowing for even coverage and the most effective solution that can last up to 10 years.
GSH’s retrofit solutions are maintenance-free and easy-to-install and promises a much longer effective lifespan than spray-on and adhesive antimicrobial products.
Allegion may not offer a retrofit solution for existing hardware, but they do offer a large line of new hardware to fit the needs of businesses and institutions around the world. Most of their designs are also available with their own silver-based antimicrobial coating.
While this solution means replacing your existing hardware, if you’re already planning on doing so or you’re working on a new remodel or expansion project, Allegion may be the most cost-effective, one-step solution on the market.
Dormakaba’s Antimicrobial Door Hardware
The solution from Dormakaba is another retrofitted solution, meaning it’s a “shield” or after-market antimicrobial solution that you can apply to your existing hardware. This brand’s solution is called UltraSheild, and they market it as being unobtrusive, durable, and effective.
Using the same silver-based protection as other brand’s solutions, Dormakaba says UltraShield will last for the life of the product and is effective around-the-clock at inhibiting microbe growth, with no need for recoating.
Ultimately, all of these solutions could prove valuable at keeping your business safer and cleaner, the key is figuring out which brand offers you the variety, guarantees, and cost-effectiveness you desire.
